Do you get anxiety in Walmart? Do you automatically feel people as they pass by you in their cars? Do you feel the sadness of the person crying across the room?
Typically when someone approaches me about being ‘sensitive’ they are looking for answers because they are tired of feeling other’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions and they do not understand themselves. Trust me, I have been there too. But what does being sensitive mean?
Being an Empath literally means you are able to channel a spirits (both Physical and in Spirit) thoughts, feelings, and emotions and often replaces them as your own. Sometimes that can mean emotionally. For instance, you read a post on Facebook of your friend who is going through a hard time. All the sudden, you immediately feel like the world is coming to an end, and your in complete despair and have no hope. It is normal for humans to have a reaction – that is empathy. But the difference here is, you didn’t just read the status and say, “Oh, I am so sorry for ____. I hope it gets better soon.” Instead, you took on the feelings of that person, and thought YOUR world was coming to an end. Sometimes, it can also appear physically, as in you see someone fall from a distance, and instantly, your knee feels like it blew out and you need an ambulance. Ok- maybe I’m using some big time examples here, but it paints the picture, right? Now compare that to your life. Do you feel like that? Does someone else’s paper cut, effect your ability to work? (Smaller, is that better?) It is important to remember that you are able to get your own feelings back through a basic understanding of what is yours vs. what is theirs.
Here are a few tips I have come up with to help ground myself in situations like the ones listed above:
Self – Check – Let’s use the Facebook status example. So you’ve read your friends status, and you feel horrible. I use the self check method. That means- ask yourself, before I read this status, how did I feel? What was I doing? If the answer is sad, ok, then we have to go deeper, but often times the answer would be I felt fine before reading it. On the contrary, if you still feel sad even after asking yourself that question, ask yourself basic questions like, “why would I feel like my world is coming to an end.” “What do I have to feel sad over?” That always helps me mentally understand that I empathically tuned into someone else.
Taylor Swiftit – Literally, Shake It OFF. I call it the Taylor Swiftit method. Literally walk outside, and just brush your shoulders off. Imagine all that energy leaving your body and going back into the earth. Do NOT do this inside your house, you don’t want to just brush negative energy into your living room. Do it outside. Clear. And if you can’t go outside, try this option.
White Light Shower – Not a literal shower, even though that would help too. Sit back in your chair and imagine a faucet above your head showering all sorts of white light, imagine the suns warmth all around you, and literally ask Spirit to clear all the uncertain energy you feel. Then, imagine your stepping into a big clear bubble and zip on the front, keeping your energy to yourself, and the other’s energy to themselves.
The Cloak that you DON’T buy on Amazon- I admit, that’s an inside joke. I had told a friend about this trick, and I obviously didn’t explain it very well. She went shopping on amazon for a cloak of protection. Basically, you take a few deep breaths and imagine you are putting on a large white cloak of protection. Wrapping your entire being in this cloak and zipping it up from the front to your head, knowing that you can still see clearly, your just nicely protected. *Note, this is all in your mind, not an actual cloak. Make sense?
I hope these little tricks help you along the way! As always, feel free to ask me any questions by contacting me. 🙂
